Education & Training
A common vocational qualification is the FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping.
The qualification is specifically designed for people working in accounting and bookkeeping roles, including contract bookkeepers and people performing bookkeeping duties within organisations.
Training covers areas such as processing financial transactions, preparing financial reports, completing reconciliations, preparing budgets and maintaining accounting records.
Training can include:
accounting software, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting and GST-related transactions.
Bookkeepers who want to provide BAS services for a fee generally need to meet additional Tax Practitioners Board registration requirements, including approved qualifications and relevant experience.
Career Changer Pathway
Bookkeeping can be a practical career change for people coming from administration, banking, payroll, accounts, office management or small-business roles.
People without previous accounting experience can complete a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping and build experience through junior bookkeeping, accounts or finance administration roles.
Existing business or administrative experience can also be valuable because bookkeepers regularly deal with invoices, suppliers, customers, payroll and business systems.
Early Career
Entry-level bookkeepers learn how to process transactions, reconcile accounts, maintain financial records and use common accounting software.
They may initially work under an experienced bookkeeper, accountant or finance manager while developing accuracy and confidence.
Common starting roles can include Accounts Clerk, Finance Assistant, Payroll Assistant or Junior Bookkeeper.
Mid Career
Experienced bookkeepers manage larger or more complex accounts and may work directly with business owners and accountants.
They may specialise in:
payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, BAS preparation, small-business bookkeeping, cloud accounting systems or financial administration.
Some bookkeepers also begin managing multiple clients or working as independent contractors.
Senior / Veteran Career
Experienced bookkeepers can progress into Senior Bookkeeper, Finance Officer, Office Manager or Bookkeeping Manager roles.
Others establish their own bookkeeping businesses and provide ongoing financial administration services to small and medium-sized businesses.
With further education, bookkeeping experience can also provide a pathway into accounting, payroll management, business administration or finance management roles.

Career Outlook
Bookkeeping remains a large occupation across Australia, with bookkeepers employed in professional services, construction, education and many other industries. JSA's current OSCA profile records approximately 79,300 workers nationally.
However, routine bookkeeping tasks are increasingly supported by cloud accounting software and automation. JSA's legacy occupation data also recorded annual employment growth of approximately -1,000 workers, suggesting the occupation is not currently experiencing the same growth as many shortage-driven careers.
Demand should remain for bookkeepers who can manage more complex reconciliations, payroll, compliance, reporting and business systems rather than relying only on basic transaction entry.
