What They Do

Electrical Engineers design, develop, test and oversee electrical equipment and systems used to generate, distribute, store and control electricity.

They may work on power stations, renewable-energy projects, transmission networks, substations, battery systems, industrial equipment, electric motors, control systems or transport infrastructure.

Their work can involve technical calculations, electrical drawings, selecting equipment, testing systems, coordinating installation and ensuring designs comply with engineering and safety standards. JSA's new OSCA profile also identifies specialisations including Power System Engineer, Grid Connection Engineer, Renewable Energy Engineer and Electrical Design Engineer.

Who This Career Suits

Electrical engineering suits people who enjoy mathematics, technology and understanding how complex systems work.

It requires analytical thinking and attention to detail, but also communication and project skills because engineers regularly work alongside technicians, tradespeople, project managers, clients and other engineers.

It can particularly suit someone interested in renewable energy, infrastructure, automation or emerging electrical technology.

Education & Training

The standard pathway to becoming a professional Electrical Engineer is an accredited university engineering qualification, usually a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with an electrical engineering specialisation.

Engineers Australia states that the standard qualification for the Professional Engineer category is an accredited four-year Australian Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), or an accredited Master of Engineering pathway. Engineers Australia

Engineers Australia maintains a current list of accredited Australian engineering programs. Accreditation means the program has been assessed against professional engineering competency standards and international benchmarks. Engineers Australia

Registration requirements vary by state, territory and the type of engineering work being undertaken. Some professional engineers may need statutory registration before providing particular engineering services. Engineers Australia

Career Changer Pathway

People with backgrounds in electrical trades, electronics, engineering technology, defence, manufacturing, automation or technical maintenance may already have valuable practical knowledge.

However, progression to professional Electrical Engineer positions generally requires an appropriate engineering qualification.

Engineering Technologists and Engineering Associates can also undertake further accredited study to progress towards the Professional Engineer category. Engineers Australia

Early Career

Graduate Electrical Engineers commonly assist with system design, calculations, drawings, equipment specifications, testing and project documentation.

They usually work alongside senior engineers while building experience across real engineering projects.

Mid Career

Experienced Electrical Engineers increasingly take responsibility for major designs and projects.

They may specialise in areas such as:

power systems, renewable energy, grid connections, industrial automation, electrical infrastructure, control systems or manufacturing.

They may also coordinate contractors, supervise junior engineers and provide technical advice to clients.

Senior / Veteran Career

Senior Electrical Engineers can progress into roles such as Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager, Project Director or Technical Specialist.

Experienced engineers may lead major energy and infrastructure programs, move into consulting or management, or establish specialist engineering businesses.

Career Outlook

JSA currently reports approximately 33,100 Electrical Engineers, with employment increasing by about 2,100 over the latest year. Jobs and Skills Australia

Electrical engineering also has an important role in Australia's energy transition. JSA identifies Electrical Engineers and Electricians as critically important occupations across clean-energy generation, storage, transmission and distribution, and says demand for these occupations is expected to be among the strongest across its net-zero scenarios. Jobs and Skills Australia

JSA has now introduced a dedicated OSCA Electrical Engineer occupation; the initial profile records 11,900 workers from Census-based data and identifies renewable energy, power systems and grid connection as key specialisations. More current OSCA labour-market data is scheduled to be added in the November 2026 update.
