What They Do

Enrolled Nurses provide practical nursing care to patients in hospitals, aged care facilities, community health services and other healthcare settings.

They monitor patients, assist with treatment plans, administer approved medications, record health information and support people with everyday care needs.

Jobs and Skills Australia identifies assessing and implementing nursing care, providing treatments and therapies and assisting Registered Nurses to coordinate and evaluate patient care among the occupation’s key tasks.

Who This Career Suits

This career suits people who enjoy helping others, practical healthcare work and being part of a clinical team.

Enrolled Nurses need empathy and patience, but they also need to remain calm and organised when patients are unwell, distressed or require urgent assistance.

It can particularly suit someone who wants a hands-on healthcare career and prefers a vocational pathway into nursing rather than completing a university degree initially.

Education & Training

The current national qualification is the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing.

The qualification prepares people to work as Enrolled Nurses under the direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse and covers nursing care across different stages of life and healthcare settings.

To become registered as an Enrolled Nurse in Australia, students must complete a Diploma of Nursing program accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council and approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Training can include:

clinical assessment, medication administration, infection control, wound care, communication, anatomy and physiology, chronic health conditions, mental health and supervised clinical placement.

Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is required before practising as an Enrolled Nurse.

Career Changer Pathway

Enrolled nursing can suit people moving from aged care, disability support, community services, allied health assistance or other caring professions.

Someone without previous healthcare experience can enter through the Diploma of Nursing and complete the required clinical placements.

People already working in healthcare may find that their experience with patient care, infection control, communication and clinical environments helps them transition into nursing training.

Early Career

Newly qualified Enrolled Nurses usually work as part of a nursing team while continuing to develop their clinical confidence and practical skills.

They monitor patients, assist with daily care, record observations and carry out nursing activities within their scope of practice.

Early-career nurses may rotate through different wards or healthcare settings to build broader experience.

Mid Career

Experienced Enrolled Nurses can take on more complex patient-care responsibilities and develop expertise in particular areas of healthcare.

They may specialise in:

aged care, rehabilitation, medical wards, surgical care, mental health, community nursing, disability services or chronic disease management.

Some also take on mentoring responsibilities for students and less experienced staff.

Senior / Veteran Career

Experienced Enrolled Nurses can progress into senior clinical or team-support roles depending on their employer and area of practice.

Others complete further study to become a Registered Nurse, usually through a Bachelor of Nursing pathway with recognition of previous nursing study where available.

Experienced Enrolled Nurses may also move into education support, care coordination, aged-care leadership or specialist clinical areas.

Career Outlook

Enrolled Nurse has been identified by Jobs and Skills Australia as a shortage occupation, reflecting ongoing demand for qualified nursing workers across hospitals, aged care and community healthcare.

JSA identifies approximately 41,600 Enrolled Nurses in the detailed occupation profile, with the profession concentrated almost entirely within the Health Care and Social Assistance industry.

Australia’s ageing population, continuing healthcare demand and workforce pressures across nursing and aged care support the longer-term need for Enrolled Nurses, even though employment can vary between states, healthcare systems and specialties.
