What They Do

Speech Pathologists assess and treat difficulties involving speech, language, voice, communication and swallowing.

They may work with children developing speech and language skills, adults recovering after stroke or brain injury, people with neurological conditions, and clients who use alternative communication systems.

Their work can involve diagnostic assessment, individual or group therapy, swallowing support, communication devices and working closely with families, teachers and other health professionals.

Who This Career Suits

Speech pathology suits people who enjoy helping others while also being interested in health, language, psychology and communication.

It requires patience, strong listening skills and the ability to adjust therapy to different people and situations.

It can particularly suit someone who wants a people-focused healthcare career without the emergency or acute-care environment associated with some other health professions.

Education & Training

The standard pathway is completion of a Speech Pathology Australia-accredited bachelor's degree or entry-level master's degree.

Bachelor programs are commonly around four years, while graduate-entry master's programs generally take around two to three years and require a previous university qualification. Accredited programs are designed to prepare graduates to meet professional entry standards. Speech Pathology Australia

Speech pathology is currently a self-regulated profession nationally rather than an Ahpra-registered profession. Speech Pathology Australia's Certified Practising Speech Pathologist credential is the key professional standard, although reforms toward mandatory registration are being considered.

Career Changer Pathway

People with backgrounds in education, psychology, linguistics, healthcare, disability support or community services may bring useful transferable skills.

For people who already hold a bachelor's degree, an accredited graduate-entry master's program can provide a pathway into the profession.

Early Career

Graduate Speech Pathologists develop their assessment and therapy skills while working with clients under guidance and professional supervision.

They may begin in hospitals, schools, disability services, community organisations or private clinics.

Mid Career

Experienced Speech Pathologists manage more complex clients and may specialise in areas such as paediatrics, swallowing disorders, neurological rehabilitation, autism, voice or augmentative communication.

They may also supervise graduates and students.

Senior / Veteran Career

Senior Speech Pathologists can progress into clinical leadership, team management, specialist practice, education or research.

Some also establish private practices, work as consultants or lead multidisciplinary allied-health teams.
